Accessibility
We want every gardener to be able to read and use this site, whatever device, browser or assistive technology they rely on.
Our approach
Raised Gardening Beds is built as simple, fast-loading pages of text, tables and photos. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA, and we keep accessibility in mind each time we add or update a guide. You can read more about how we work on our about page.
What we do
- Semantic HTML: Each page has one main heading, with sections and subsections in order, so screen readers can move through a guide by heading.
- Alt text: Every photo has a written description of what it shows.
- Keyboard navigation: Menus, links and question-and-answer sections can be reached and opened with a keyboard alone, and the focused item is outlined so you can see where you are.
- Color contrast: Text is set in a near-black ink on a light cream background, and buttons use deep green or cedar brown, chosen to keep contrast high.
- Readable text: Pages use system fonts, resize cleanly when you zoom, and work on narrow phone screens.
- No barriers: The site has no forms, logins or accounts to get through before you can read a guide.
Known limits
Some photos are decorative and add little beyond their description. A few wide comparison tables may need sideways scrolling on small screens. We review pages as we update them and fix problems we find.
